Friday Freaky Fatwa; Can Muslims eat Fish Eyes?

A Muslim asks a scholar

I need to know whether we as Muslims are allowed to eat the eyes of a fish. I was eating at a seafod restaurant with a friend and I was enjoying the head of the fish and then I ate the eye and he was quite disgusted and said that it is not allowed in Islam. Is that true?

And the scholar replies

Praise be to Allah.

Allah has permitted us all the produce of the sea: 2:96 “Lawful to you is the pursuit of water-game and its use for food…”

It is strange indeed that a person could dare to forbid something that Allah has permitted. This is a very serious matter, as Allah says:
5:87“O you who believe! Make not unlawful all that is good which Allah has made lawful to you, and transgress not. Verily, Allah does not like the transgressors.”
Wow!  Can you believe they actually wrote that?

7:32 “Say: ‘Who has forbidden the adornment with clothes given by Allah, which He has produced for His slaves, and all kinds of lawful things of food?’ Say: ‘They are, in the life of this world, for those who believe, (and) exclusively for them (believers) on the Day of Resurrection (the disbelievers will not share them).’ Thus We explain in detail for people who have knowledge.”
Totally going Quran, that’s awesome!

10:59 “Say: ‘Tell me, what provision Allah has sent down to you! And you have made of it lawful and unlawful.’ Say: ‘has Allah permitted you to do so, or do you invent a lie against Allah?’”
That’s what I’ve been saying to them…are they finally listening?

Allah has also warned His slave against forbidding anything without knowledge. He said (interpretation of the meaning):
16:116 “And say not concerning that which your tongues put forth falsely: ‘This is lawful and this is forbidden,’ so as to invent lies against Allah. Verily, those who invent lies against Allah will never prosper.”
Yes!  And the proof is all the poor Sharia/hadith run countries!

This person who has invented a lie against Allah by saying that it is haraam to eat the eye of a fish must repent to Allah, and not go beyond the limits in talking about the Religion of Allah. He should not speak without knowledge. Even if he is put off by something or feels disgusted by it, he has no right to say that it is haraam.
Daaayaam!  Even the commentary is Hadith free!

The Prophet hated the smell of garlic, and said:
“Whoever eats anything from this unpleasant plant should not approach us in the mosque.”
The people said, “It has become haraam (forbidden), it has become haraam.”
When the Prophet heard what was being said, he said: “O people, it is not for me to forbid something that Allah has permitted; this is just a vegetable whose smell is unpleasant.”
uh-oh….

Although the Messenger of Allah disliked the idea of eating lizard-meat, he did not forbid others to eat it, as is reported in the following story:

From Bukhaari, “Khaalid ibn al-Waleed reported that some grilled lizard meat was brought to the Prophet and put in front of him. He stretched out his hand to take some, but one of the people present said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, it is lizard meat,’ so he pulled his hand back.
Khalid ibn al-Waleed asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, is lizard haraam?’
He said, ‘No, but it is not known among my people and I cannot face eating it.’
So Khalid took some of the lizard meat and ate it, whilst the Messenger of Allah looked on.”
what the hell….whaat?....!

After explaining this answer to you, I want to warn you about something that I noticed in your question, where you said that you went to the seafood restaurant with a male friend. If this person is not your husband or a mahram (blood-relative whom you are permanently forbidden to marry), then you should fear Allah. Ask yourself: which is more serious, eating the eye of a fish or going out with a man to whom you are not related to sit and chat with him in a restaurant?
Allah dam-it!!  I just got punked!!!

There is nothing in the Quran that forbids having lunch with anyone!…damn fool scholar….had me going there for a minute….can’t eat fish eyeballs for lunch with the opposite sex…..pffftt….bet he has a rule on fish mingling… a dead female fish cannot be on the same table as a dead male fish- because their eyeballs are still open and they might see your awrah…because Bukhari said; someone said, someone else said, what someone else heard someone else say, the prophet said….I don’t like lizard meat.

A Muslim asks a scholar

Is it permissible to eat fermented foods made at home, such as pickled cabbage, soy sauce, leavened bread, in order to help the digestion process?
Praise be to Allah.

And the scholar replies

Firstly:  uh-oh. Firstly is code for; we’re gonna make it up now

The problem is the use of yeast in these pickles.
Pickles?

Yeast is used to make beer, and other alcoholic drinks. If the amount of yeast in these pickles and the like is very little, and it has dissolved in them, so that it does not have the effect of causing intoxication or languor, there is nothing wrong with using yeast in them, and eating these pickles.
Getting pickled by eating pickles….is that possible?

But if the yeast has a lasting effect on them, such that if the one who ate a lot of these pickles would become intoxicated or tired, it is haraam to use the yeast in them, or to eat anything to which yeast has been added in this way.
But you won’t know untill you eat 10.
It’s ok to eat pickles and to let Peter Piper pick a pack of pickles.

A Muslim asks a scholar

Is Ostrich meat permissible?  What about crocodiles and frogs?
And the scholar replied
Praise be to Allah.

Yes, it is permissible to eat ostrich meat. The basic principle concerning all of them is that in general they are permissible, except for those which have been excluded.

Bukhaari; It was narrated that ‘Ali said: “The Messenger of Allah forbade mut’ah (temporary marriage) and he forbade the meat of donkeys.
Because everyone knows those two things go together.
They should of stopped with; yes.

Crocodiles. The correct view is that eating these is not allowed, because they have fangs.
But their God says they can eat you

Frogs. It is not permitted to eat them because the Prophet forbade killing them, as is reported in the hadith of Uthman, who said that the Messenger of Allah forbade the killing of frogs.
Is the Quran not complete without Uthman?

Otters and turtles.  It is permissible to eat them after slaughtering them properly, because they live both on land and in the sea.
Except for crabs which do not need to be slaughtered, even though they live both on land and in the sea, because they do not have blood.
Mmmmm….eating live crab…owch!  It’s better to kill them first!

Some scholars exclude sea snakes, but the correct view is that as they live nowhere except in the water, we are permitted to eat them.
I’m surprised they didn’t forbid lamb as it was a talking lamb chop that killed Muhammad…so says Bukhari Hadith.  Yeah, chew on that one Hadithians.

Everything that can cause harm is forbidden as food, even if it comes from the sea, because Allah says: “… And do not kill yourselves nor kill one another. and: “… and do not throw yourselves into destruction…”
Great, when they do use the Quran they pick out verses that have nothing to do with the topic.  Death by food…murdered with a pickle…thrown into a bag of chips…

A Muslim asks a scholar

Did Muhhamad(SAW) ever teach people not to eat Fish and Milk together??
And the scholar replies
Praise be to Allah.

It was not narrated that the Prophet forbade drinking milk at the same time as eating fish.
Hmm…weren’t they saying earlier that no one could forbid what Allah had not?  ….seems fishy to me…

Since no such thing has been proven, then we should refer to the doctors concerning this issue. If they say that eating these things together is harmful, then they should not be eaten together, rather they should be eaten separately.
So how many of you are going to make a doctor’s appointment to find out if drinking milk at the same time as eating fish is harmful?  I can save you a trip. If you drink milk at the same time that you eat fish, you could choke.  Swallow, and then drink.

And Allah knows best.
Allah is still laughing

A Muslim asks a scholar

Is it permissible to eat fish and potato fries which have been cooked in oil, if non-halaal meat and /or pork has also been fried in it?
And is it necessary to ask the shopkeeper whether he fries everything in the same oil, or should you not ask and just eat?
This is a real day to day problem affecting many Muslims living in the West.

And the scholar replies

Praise be to Allah.

We put this question to Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen, who replied as follows:

“If we know that most of the food cooked in it is impure, such as dead meat or pork, then we have to ask, but if we do not know that, then we do not need to ask.
Ah, don’t ask, don’t tell.

This answer is missing a Hadith so I’m going to throw one in.  Narrated Abu Huraira; It was forbidden to keep the hands on the hips during the prayer.

And Allah knows best

A Muslim asks a scholar

Can we speak while eating?
And the scholar replies
Praise be to Allah.

It is proven that the Prophet talked whilst eating.

It is narrated from Jaabir ibn ‘Abd-Allah that the Prophet asked his family for condiments and they said: We do not have anything but vinegar. He called for it and he started eating it, saying: “What a good condiment vinegar is, what a good condiment vinegar is.”

In these hadiths there is evidence that it is permissible to speak whilst eating. As for the hadiths that forbid doing so, none of them are reliable.
Well that Hadith only says that you can talk about vinegar.
And Allah knows best. and said that whilst eating a pickle

Ramadan will soon be over and Eid will begin.  To all those who fasted faithfully, I wish for you many blessings.
